Language, logic and mathematics in Frege and Wittgenstein

En remplaçant la distinction grammaticale entre sujet et prédicat par la distinction mathématique entre argument et fonction à titre de cellule de base de l’analyse logique, Frege n’a pas seulement ouvert la voie à la logique mathématique, c’est-à-dire à une logique taillée sur mesure pour exprimer les preuves mathématiques, mais il a également radicalement transformé notre compréhension des relations entre langage, logique, et mathématiques. Les critiques de Frege par Wittgenstein ne possèdent une portée permanente que pour autant qu’elles proviennent d’une compréhension en profondeur des motivations philosophiques de Frege. L’objet du workshop, rassemblant des chercheurs et des doctorants de l’Universidade Federal de Goiás (Brésil) et de l’Université de Strasbourg, est de fournir un cadre adéquat pour échanger sur ces questions.

By substituting the mathematical nexus of argument and function for the grammatical nexus of subject and predicate as the fundamental unit of logical analysis, not only did Frege make room for mathematical logic, i.e. a logic tailor-made to capture mathematical proofs, but he also dramatically transformed our understanding of the relationships between language, logic, and mathematics. Wittgenstein’s criticisms of Frege are of lasting significance only insofar as they arise from a deep appreciation of Frege’s philosophical motivations. The aim of this workshop, which gathers scholars and doctorate students from the University of Goiás in Brazil and the University of Strasbourg, is to provide a proper setting for discussing these issues.
